Boronox - Unholy DK DPS (Transfer)

Postby Boronox on Sun Jan 31, 2010 3:56 pm

Character Name: Boronox

Server: I'm currently on Ner'zhul, but would transfer if everything works out.

Class: Deathknight

Primary Spec: My Current DPS Spec is 17/0/54 Unholy, however, once I gear up a bit more, I'll be switching to 14/0/57 to pick up Reaping.

Link to your Armory Profile: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Ner%27zhul&cn=Boronox

I’m sorry for the horrible trinket. I’ve not had any luck on others dropping, and since I wasn’t doing any serious raiding with this guy, I didn’t want to waste the 6kg on a DMC:G.

UI Screenshot:
Image

WWS Parses or equivalent: I haven’t ran any on this character, as he was only doing PuGs, and I never thought a raiding guild would actually be looking for a DK. I’ve got my weeklyICC10 on Monday and I will run one for you then. My dps ran around 6.9k – 7.2k on Festergut 10 last week, if that gives some perspective.

Do you have an authenticator? Yes, mobile one.

Tell us about your last guild(s) and the history with why are you choosing us over them:

I started my WoW career on Shadow Council Horde in a guild called The Deepwater Pirates. I ran for them for most of Vanilla and all of BC, then a few months into Wrath.

A few months into WotLK, I got married, and could no longer raid with my original guild. So in January 09, I rerolled over on Ner'Zhul and joined up with Outplayed.

After being on Ner’zhul for around a month, Outplayed merged with Jolly Rogers and I went over with them. JR was going well for a while, until several people left and there was a general apathy for trying anything but the base raids. This included the complete stop of raiding 25 man Uld once ToC was released, even though we didn't have any of the hard modes down. In retrospect, I should have gone to join another guild at that time; however, I'm loyal almost to a fault and decided to stick it out to see if they could come back. JR currently doesn’t even have enough people to fill a 10 man raid, thus I’ve resorted to PuGing/running my own groups.

In October, I started doing some runs on my hunter with AHH and got to where I was running with then on a semi-consistent basis, as pretty much a fill in. Then, I went to Israel for about 2 weeks, and when I came back, they had permanently filled their roster.

After that, with no raiding to speak of and 3.3 coming out, I turned my attention pretty much full time to my DK, Boronox. A note, this is my 3rd DK to 80 and the 2nd one to raid with, so I don't want it to seem as if I've only been playing a DK since 3.3 has launched.

What interested me about your guild is that you seem very dedicated to raiding. Raiding is the most enjoyable thing to me in WoW and it drives me crazy to have to PuG it just to be able to see it. I'm looking for a good group of players that are willing to work their hardest to push the envelope. You seem to be those people.

Bonus extra question! Raid Experience:

Vanilla: MC, BWL, ZG, AQ20. Guild had a falling out about halfway though getting though BWL, so we never got to finish it nor poke our heads into AQ40.

BC: Kara, ZA, Magtheradon, Gruul, SSC, TK. I got married towards the end of TBC, so I didn't get a chance to do BT as I took about a 3 month break. When I can back, the raid times didn't really line up with my new schedual.

WotLK(all 10 and 25 man unless specified): Naxx, Malygos, OS, VoA, Uld (Glory of the Raider 10 man), ToC 10 and 25, ToGC 25 (up to Anub), ICC 25 up to, but not killing Putricide and Blood Queen. For 25 mans, I've been hosting my own weekly PuG on Saturdays. We've consistently gotten to where we one shot everything in the first wing. We do fine up until Festergut, but the PuG dps just wasn't enough to get him down.

During my time with JR, I had 99.98% attendance for all of Ulduar and ToC (while we ran it). This was raiding 3 nights a week from 7-11.

Tell us how you play your class, and how it makes you stand apart from others:
I like to play my class to the best it can be played. So, in order to do this, I am constantly reserching mechanics, reading forums (EJ, SA), and if I'm raiding with other DK's that are doing better than I am, I will talk with them to see how I can improve. One thing I'm very good at is putting down my pride in order to make myself better. I don't mind being called out if I'm sucking it up (in fact, I welcome it). I push myself to the limit trying to squeeze every ounce of DPS I can.

As far as logistics, my standard rotation (until I get Reaping) is:
PS-IT-BS-BS-SS-RP Dump (edited to fix my stupid typo)
SS-BS-BS-SS-RP Dump

If something happens and I get off on my rotation, I'll pop either Rune Tap or Empowered Rune Weapon to reset and get back on target. I also monitor my procs in order to pop Gargoyle at the optimal time.

What do you have bound to your 1-5 keys?

A little extra, but:

Keybindings:
` (9)-Death Pact for emergency heals.
1- Icy Touch
2-Blood Strike
3-Scourge Strike
4-Plague Strike
5-Blood Tap (for an extra bone shield or BB on AOE)
6- Dark Command for emergency Taunts
Mouse 3(0) – Death and Decay
Mouse 5 – Death Coil
Mouse 4 – Death Grip

Alt +
`(9) – Parachute!
1 – Horn of Winter
2 - Pestilence
3 – Death Strike
4 – Blood Boil
M3 – Gargoyle
M5 – Empowered Rune Weapon
M4 – Strangulation

Shift +
M3 – Chains of Ice
M5 – Bone Armor
M4 – Mind Freeze

Ctrl +
M3 – Iron Bound Fortitude
M5 – Anti-Magic Shield

Tell us about yourself. Show us the man/woman behind the character. And impress us, make us laugh. Convince us we want you in our guild. If you don't take the time to sell yourself, there's no reason for us to want to take you. We've worked hard to make this a great place to raid and demand incoming candidates prove they're committed to continuing that.

I'm 28/m and married.
I live in Chattanooga, TN, and have for coming up two years now.
I've got a BS in Computer Science, but it was from a university in Arkansas, so it may not mean much.
I work in Web Development, so I've got a steady job, thus negating the chance that I will not have enough money to play.
I've been in Tae Kwon-do since I was about 5 and am currently a 4th Degree Black Belt, along with having won numerous national and international competitions for forms, sparring, and board breaking.
Some times in Raid chat I will randomly start talking like a pirate.
When I was a child, I once hid my fathers belt in order to prevent punishment. It didn't work.
For some reason, I will randomly type "Tacos" when debugging and testing stuff, even though I really don't like tacos.

"I Convinced My Boss
To Write All Company Mail
In the Haiku Form"

I've had 5 pet turtles in my life. They have all died and I don't remember the names of any of them.
My favorite food is cheese and ice cream, separately.

On a semi-more serious note. I'm pretty easy going and hard to make angry, which is great for those countless wipes that inevitably happen during raid progression. I'm also persistent to the point of stubbornness when it comes to accomplishing a task and will do what it takes to accomplish it, even if it means changing the way I think or do what I have been thinking or doing up to that point.
I think that's enough for now. Feel free to ask anything about me though!

Couple of things I see.

One: You Icy Touch before you Plague Strike. This is bad, except for when you are moving in without runic power to instead Death Coil. With Rage of Rivendare, you would increase the damage done by Icy Touch by 10% by reversing this.

Two: You assert that you've raided on other toons. Prior to this one. Can we get links for these toons to see your overall experience?

I'm not the DK expert. They'll be here soon.

Good luck :)

I'm just taking a cursory glance at this app while waiting in line at the supermarket, so I may have missed some things, but I'm pleased to see some clever and ergonomic keybinds. I'll take another look at your app when I get home.

This is awesome. I type insults to myself when debugging, often full of curse words. Good luck with your app!

Like Azerial was saying your rotation is incorrect. Honestly I don't think your ready for a guild with any kind of serious raiding. You have some poor gem choices along with the attitude that 5k is to much to spend for a good upgrade. No parses and no real hard mode experience.

Yeah I spent 8k or whatever on the Dalaran ring and 3 upgrades when 3.3 hit and that was only like a 4 DPS upgrade. That's the type of mentality you need to have for this guild.

1) Argh! I'm very sorry about that. You are correct and I have updated the App to reflect that. The IT-PS rotation is my Frost Tanking single target one. I don't know why I was put it as my DPS one. I do always use PS-IT-ect. as my Unholy DPS rotation. Sorry for the oversight.

2) Of course! Here's my Hunter, who I raided with starting halfway though Naxx though the start of ToC:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-shee ... ul&cn=Smit

And, even before that, here's my first Death Knight, who got though the first part of Naxx before I rerolled:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-shee ... cn=Boronox (I haven't touched this character in forever, please forgive his horrible gear)

And my first character, which I played for around 4 years:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-shee ... &cn=Borack (man he is ugly)

I didn't mean to imply that I have a problem spending any amount to make my raiding character the best he can be. This death knight started out as an alt while I was raiding with my hunter full time. After the guild stopped raiding and I no longer had my hunter to raid on, I switched gears and started gearing up the DK. If the DK had been in any sort of raiding guild, I wouldn't have hesitated a moment to drop what ever cash is needed. I do dailies, sell my daily transmutes, and play the AH a bit to keep my gold at a nice, healthy level in order to fund anything I need to do.

As far as poor gem choices, after you said that, I went back and re-evaluated my choices. I had foolishly been using the EJ BiS thread (http://elitistjerks.com/f72/t55505-opti ... ted_3_3_a/) to pattern gem choices, along with some apparently bad information from an SA thread.

I went and recalculated using the EJ stat weight table:

Code: Select all
Stat               iLvl 245/258  iLvl 251/258  iLvl 264  iLvl 277
Attack Power      1.00            1.00          1.00    1.00
Strength          3.06            3.03          3.03    3.01
Crit Rating       2.16            1.95          2.10    2.23
ArP Rating        2.01            2.25          2.49    2.92
Expertise Rating  1.63            1.72          1.77    1.93
Haste Rating      1.75            1.93          2.01    2.09
Agility           1.55            1.36          1.48    1.58
MeleeHit (<8%)    3.62            3.75          3.92    4.34
SpellHit (8%-11%) 0.60            0.60          0.62    0.67
WeaponDPS         6.67            7.21          7.42    7.86
WeaponSpeed      25.55           26.56          29.41   33.29
Armor            0.028           0.028         0.028    0.028

And have changed out some gems (4 of the +20 Str to 10 Str/10CR) in order to pick up more optimal socket bonus. Thanks for pointing this out!

As far as Heroics, I know it doesn't mean much these days, but I do have an Rusted drake on both my DK and Hunter, so it proves I at least don't stand in fire.

As far as a parse, I'll be running ICC10 tomorrow night, so I'll grab one then so that I can post at least something.

I agree, and as stated above, I have such a mentality.

IMO current guild trials should refrain from posting in the application forums until they make member.

Aside from that... While I'm again not home and am squinting at my phone to read and right in this thread, I'm liking your responses to our members' questions and the actions you're taking to fix yourself.

Personally I like this app so far, but I'm refraining from judgement until I can really go through your armory a little deeper and (more importantly) get to see some WWS. Toss your ICC 10 whenever you get around to running it.

I know it was removed, but I wanted to answer anyways.

First, I know I'm way over hit. The majority of my hit come from the Citadel Enforcer's Claymore (103 HR, woop) that I've got. I know I could drop some hit if I got the Crusader Orb bracers, however, as I said with the DMC:G, I've been reluctant to spend large amounts of money for a character not in a raiding guild (once again, I have no problem doing this when it counts!). Also, I've been holding on to the money that I've saved in order to get the Primordial Saronite for Shadow's Edge. If I got one, (or even Bryntroll even though only 1 has dropped in the 4 times I've done Marrowgar with my PuG group), that would solve both my Hit problems and give me the arguably BiS weapon until Heroic Bryntroll. This seemed like a more prudent use of my gold.

Second, on the 2PT9, I figured, especially since I'm going to be able to get the T10 pants tomorrow, that the higher gear would be better. This, it seems was an error.

I went back and did some recalculations:

This is my current gear with the T10 pants:

Code: Select all

Total STR:   812     ---  2484.72
Total Arm:   10261   ---  287.308
Total AP:     125    ---  125
Total CR:     362    ---  781.92
Total AGI:    31     ---  48.05
Total Haste: 84      ---  147
T102P                ---  243.33
--------------
Total Stat Weight:      4117.328

Compared to if I change out my 251 chest to go back to the T9 232 and pick up the 2PT9.

Code: Select all
Total STR:   744   --- 2233.8
Total Arm:   9967  ---  279.076
Total AP:    125   ---  125
Total CR:    358   ---  773.28
Total AGI:   31    ---  48.05
Total Haste: 135   ---  236.25
Total ArP  : 72    ---  144.72
T102P              ---  243.33
T92P               ---  147.54
--------------
Total Stat Weight:      4231.476

So, a net difference of 114.148 Stat weight. Welp, I was wrong on that one. Thanks again!

Thanks! Like I mentioned before, I have no problems taking criticism and encourage it so that I can get better. I hope that this application process, and my responses, will demonstrate that I am willing to learn and do the leg work that is required for your level of raiding. Hopefully it won't be taken in a way that says I'm just an idiot who doesn't know how to play. :)

Edit: P.S. I LOVE PBF comics. Even if I don't get a chance to raid with you guys, I'll be happy that this app is plastered with a PBF strip.
